A Journal Bearing also known as a sleeve or plain bearing is a sliding contact bearing in which the sliding action is along the circumference of a circle or an arc of a circle and carrying radial loads. When the angle of contact of the bearing with the journal is 120°, then the bearing is said to be a partial journal bearing. It is also called a clearance bearing because the diameter of the journal is less than that of the bearing. This type of bearing can be used only where the load is always in one direction. Attributes: • Designed to minimize friction between the shaft and the bearing surface • Provided with an oil hole that guides the lubrication. • Can accommodate misalignment between the shaft and the bearing surface • Possesses high shock load resistance, and minimizes vibration. Applications: A Journal Bearing, partial in particular has its application in railroad car axles.
